Welcoming 2018!

I hope everyone had a great holiday season! It was our first as a shop, and we enjoyed all of the handmade holiday cheer that each of you brought to the shop! The new year is upon us, and this is the time of year that I like to reflect on achievements and look forward to what the new year has in store.

Year of Firsts

This year was a year full of firsts for the shop! We opened our doors on January 14th, 2017, and  the community welcomed us with open arms. It has been an exciting first year with such a beautiful and caring community to back us up.

We welcomed our first employees and instructors! Most of our team has been with us since opening day and we are so thankful to have such knowledgable team members. Each person brings their own speciality to the shop, creating a welcoming and inviting space for all makers alike.

It was our first year participating in yarn crawl! We had such a great time getting to know the community better and meeting so many lovely yarn enthusiasts! We have some great ideas for Chicago Yarn Crawl 2018, all thanks to your input!

This year we partnered up with Heidi from Hands Occupied to host our first #MKALIRL (Mystery Knit A Long In Real Life). For several weeks we meet every Friday to knit along with Heidi's KAL and generally hang out. What a great way to get the community together! We'll be hosting more KAL's in the future!

Looking forward to 2018

We have some great things in the works for 2018. We are starting to fill up our workshop schedule to bring you new and fun workshops with guest artists and instructors!

We are working hard to continually bring you more all natural and sustainable yarns from the Americas and around the world. Our goal is to focus on indie and all natural dyers, who use local wool and sustainable practices.

As always, our main goal is to continue to support and grow the maker community by offering classes, project support, and hosting events to bring the maker community together!

We appreciate everyone who has come through the shop and supported us in all the little ways that have made a big impact on our community!

Happy New Year and Welcome 2018!

For Him

For Him

This week I was out with friends and I was immediately captivated with one of my friends sweater. He was wearing a natural alpaca wool sweater with a clean design. This friend always has great knits and I realized that most of what I look at is designs that are made with women in mind. My friend inspired me to make an effort to widen my pattern inspiration to be more inclusive for the men who also love to knit and wear handmade knits.

December is finally upon us and I am excited to celebrate the last month of the year! This week, I will be teaching the Amigurumi Crochet Christmas Workshop, and I am inspired by all the small projects that bring beauty and fun for this festive time of year. Sometimes it's just nice to make something that brings you joy when you look at it. These projects are also great to use up those yarn tidbits you have collected throughout your projects. Plus, all these patterns are FREE! Handmade holidays, here we come!!

From Pasture to Project

From Pasture to Project

Last weekend I took a mini road trip with my boyfriend up to Northern Michigan. We had a lovely weekend eating farm to table food, drinking local cider, visiting local yarn shops, and kayaking down the clearest river we've ever seen. During our trip, we had many discussions about supporting local economies, sustainable businesses and why we at Firefly are dedicated to doing just that. This inspired me to share with you the businesses we support and why it is important for us to be an all natural and sustainable business.

It also starts the holiday season with one of my favorite holidays, Halloween! This week I put together mini skein kits inspired by my favorite Halloween color ways and I shared some great patterns to go with them! I hope to inspire your holiday creativity as you start this holiday season! Enjoy, and happy making!

Color Me Pretty

Color Me Pretty

This week I was inspired by our Intro to Fair Isle workshop to find patterns that play with color. Whether it's finding the right color balance for a project, or contrasting color for an extra pop, almost all of us can agree that color plays a big part in the yarn we love and the projects we make. This week, I challenge you to explore mixing colors and textures for your projects. An unusual pairing might end up being a delight!

Wee Ones

Wee Ones

What do I love about kids patterns?
1. They are cute
2. They go by fast
3. They don't use a ton of yarn
4. They are great for busting some of your stash!

Plus, most of the patterns have an adult version for those of us that like a little playfulness in our lives!

Seasons Change

Seasons Change

The fall winds are starting to blow through Chicago. The change from Summer to Fall has always been my favorite transition. It's like a sigh of relief from the hot and busy summer. And, it's the time I feel most inspired to pick up all the crafts and just start making! Over the last 8 months, Firefly has grown and started to spread her wings. And, much like the Fall winds, I finally can sigh in relief and start some new beginnings. As a shop owner, I look at patterns every day. I believe it is important to constantly inspire myself, that way I can help inspire others. And what better way to spread the inspiration than create an Inspiration Blog dedicated to patterns and yarn that inspire us together! Once a week I will put together a post about what has inspired me throughout the week and hopefully I can pass that on to you.
