From Pasture to Project

Last weekend I took a mini road trip with my boyfriend up to Northern Michigan. We had a lovely weekend eating farm to table food, drinking local cider, visiting local yarn shops, and kayaking down the clearest river we've ever seen. During our trip, we had many discussions about supporting local economies, sustainable businesses and why we at Firefly are dedicated to doing just that. This inspired me to share with you the businesses we support and why it is important for us to be an all natural and sustainable business.

We can reduce our business model down to one word: Kindness. We try to approach every aspect of our business with kindness. This includes the yarns we carry, the independent business owners we work with, and you, our customers. Was the earth treated with kindness when the wool was farmed? Do the business owners we work with take kindness as seriously as we do? How can we offer these little kindnesses to you to carry on through your work? These are all questions we are constantly asking to ensure we bring you the best quality yarn that we can.

Here are four of many brands that we carry and their story on sustainability.

The Yarns of Rhichard Devrieze

Based in Ontario, Canada, the Yarns of Rhichard Devrieze is run by Rhichard and his partner Robert. Their yarn lines are each named after various sheep they have raised over the years. Although they do not raise sheep any longer, they are both very conscious of framing practices and bio-diversity conservation from the wool they supply. Robert's biology and farming background mixed with Rhichard's mastery in dyeing techniques brings a richness to our all natural selection.

Vegan Yarn

Vegan Yarn is 100% organic, fair-trade cotton sourced from Peru. The yarn is dyed from all natural plant dyes by the independent dyers Heidi and Jeremy, in British Columbia, Canada. Heidi created her business after realizing there was a serious lack of all natural, sustainable, vegan yarn. We wanted to offer a vegan option that wasn't reliable on plastic yarn bases, making Vegan Yarn the perfect partner for a plant based option. This incredibly soft cotton is perfect for baby items and garments.

What's available at the shop:
Spica - Fingering weight // 100% Organic Cotton // Natural Plant Dyes
Capella - Sport weight // 100% Organic Cotton // Natural Plant Dyes
