Yarn Characteristics

We have added a Yarn Characteristics Meter to each of our products, to help you gauge the feel of yarn you have never worked with before. This meter is just a general description meant to help you understand the quality of yarn if you can’t feel it in person. This is a sliding scale and every person perceives the feel of yarn differently. Scroll down to read the description of each yarn characteristic.

Rustic: Rustic is hard working and warm wool. You will not want this wool next to skin, but it makes an excellent top layer that will keep you warm and last generations. This is a yarn that will be great as a heirloom project. Think rugs, jackets, and overmitts.

Textured: Textured feel is hardy and strong. If you like working with Shetland wool, we grade this as textured. It will last a lifetime, and is great for jackets, hats, mitts, and socks.

Smooth: Smooth is a strong yarn, and we grade it as “normal wool feel”. You can wear it next to your skin, but maybe not next to sensitive areas, such as your neck and face. A great wool for blankets, sweaters, amigurumi, and everything in between.

Soft: This is yarn that you can wear next to your neck and face with little to no irritation. Think superwash merino. This yarn can pill, but it’s softness and beautiful drape is worth it! Perfect for garments and baby items.

Luscious: The softest most luxurious yarn; beyond soft! Perfect for sensitive skin, like your neck, face, and wrists. This is a true “treat yourself” type of yarn, and a perfect gift for your favorite maker.
